The Labour Party’s National Policy Forum has recommended Votes at 16 be included in the next Labour manifesto. The overwhelming victory was achieved as a result of the hard work of all the youth representatives on the forum, who spent the weekend winning the argument about votes at 16. The amendment passed by a large majority. Olivia Bailey, Vice Chair of Young Labour and proposer of the amendment said about the vote: "As a former Member of the UK Youth Parliament I was proud to champion the Votes at 16 motion. Young Labour has listened to the excellent campaigns organised by the British Youth Council, UK Youth Parliament and other youth organisations - Young Labour was keen to spearhead this within the Labour Party." Young Labour is campaigning to make sure the promise is included in the next manifesto. Stephanie Peacock, NEC Youth Rep said: "Young Labour has been listening to young people and their youth organisations. We await conference’s final say so, but we want Votes at 16 to be in our manifesto. Young Labour delegates should be proud of their success." 16 year olds can get married and join the army. They pay adult fares on transport and they pay taxes, yet they cannot vote. Lowering the voting age to 16 would give young people more of a voice and a stake in...

Helping young people reach their potential

Sports stars, musicians and media high-flyers are to help young people reach their potential through a £3 million mentoring programme. Andy Burnham MP, Labour’s Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, announced the funding over the next three years to help young people in challenging circumstances. The scheme will be run in conjunction with Youth Music, Media Trust, Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust. Andy Burnham said: "Each and every young person should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Sadly, too many youngsters go off the rails for want of someone they can respect to steer them in the right direction. "The Youth Mentoring Programme helps young people find a new passion to stimulate their interest and increase their self-confidence. With just a little encouragement and advice these people may well go on to be the broadcasters, sports stars and musicians of the future." Each strand of the programme – media, music and sport – will receive £1 million over three years in order to run the mentoring scheme....

John Denham MP has called for millions of employees to seize the opportunity of higher education and improve their job prospects. Speaking at the University of Southampton, Labour’s Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills said: “Our own recent research found that four million people are considering, or willing to consider participating in higher education. “These are people who are likely to be already in work; they may have family commitments and perhaps missed out on the opportunity to go to university the first time around. There may be others who now consider, quite wrongly, that their time has passed. "We are now giving them a second chance. I believe that every person who has the ability to go to university should also have the opportunity to do so. We must send out a clear message that it is not too late. "And I believe that if we are to create the high-level skills base by 2020 that the UK needs, then we must aim to give those four million people who want to go to university the chance to get one of the increasingly wide range of qualifications that higher education has to offer." Current estimates suggest that a university degree is worth well over £100,000 (after tax at today’s prices) more than stopping education at A-Level. The Labour Government has already set out a range of policies to encourage more adults to consider higher education. These include the new ‘University Challenge’, which will give 20 towns or...

At a time of global economic uncertainty, the last thing young Londoners need is an incompetent Boris Johnson in City Hall taking risks with their cost of living. Boris Johnson keeps making cynical election promises that he could never pay for, but Londoners need to know that his election would mean • Higher bus fares • Fewer affordable homes • Higher tube fares • No tough action on crime Londoners said they wanted to more bobbies on the beat and to know their local police. As a result, Ken Livingstone and the Labour Government have made sure that Safer Neighbourhood police teams are every part of London. Now you can find the names and contact details of your local Sergeant, PCs and PCSOs here>> Yes now we have neighbourhood policing, but now young Londoners are worried about violent crime and youth crime. That’s why Ken has pledged an extra 1,000 police for London and £79 million for more youth activities across London. Boris Johnson has made lots of noise about crime and youth crime – but his record as an MP shows that he voted against automatic five year sentences for people caught carrying an illegal gun. In 2000 Londoners said that there was too much congestion, and that public transport wasn’t good enough. By introducing the congestion charge, Ken has been able to help control congestion and raise funds to improve transport, especially buses, across the capital. As a result, London has seen an unprecedented shift from cars onto...

Year of Reading launched at Downing Street

The Prime Minister, along with Labour’s Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls, have launched the National Year of Reading at Downing Street. Campaigns and activities connected with the Year of Reading aim to encourage people to read in businesses, homes and communities around the country – helping to improve access through schools and libraries. Ed Balls said: "I want every school, college, library and employer to pledge to join in with the Year of Reading by signing up online. "Books are at the heart of the Year's activities but all reading 'counts'. Newspapers, magazines, poetry, song lyrics, screenplays and blogs will all feature as part of the Year's activities. "There has been a huge amount of attention recently on reading at school, and rightly so. Every child must be able to read and write confidently; that is one of the highest priorities of this government. We are investing in high-quality phonics materials, free books for babies and children, catch-up support and small group tuition to help everybody achieve that goal. "But the National Year of Reading is about much more than children's achievement at school. It is about the potential of reading to open doors. "We need children, adults, and families to be reading because they love it and appreciate the opportunities that reading brings - not because people like me say it's important. And it's never too late to improve your reading skills. “ You can sign up for updates about the campaign and find...

"Today marks the 60th Anniversary of Burma's independence. We congratulate the people of Burma on this historic landmark. "But for 45 of the last 60 years Burma has been under military rule. The brutal suppression of peaceful demonstrations last autumn was a sad reminder of the extent to which the Burmese people's aspirations for democracy, stability and prosperity have been frustrated. They deserve far better. "We call once more upon the Burmese regime to embrace the path of constructive dialogue that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has called for. Only through a process of genuine national reconciliation can a better future for the people of Burma be realised. "The UK remains committed to international action on Burma. We support the efforts of the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to Burma, Ibrahim Gambari and we are working closely with our EU partners to bring pressure for change to bear on the regime."...
